Flying In
Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is at 400 Airways Avenue, about 20 minutes from the historic district. Uber and Lyft pick up at the north entrance of baggage claim, taxis are outside baggage claim on the lower level, and rental car counters are in baggage claim.
Getting Around Downtown
The historic district is built around squares and it is made for walking. Two free options help.
- The DOT shuttle is free and runs two loops, about every ten minutes at 18 stops, seven days a week. Check its site for weekend hours.
- The Savannah Belles Ferry is free and crosses the river to Hutchinson Island, next to the Westin, about every 10 minutes from 7 am to 10 pm, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
Parking
The City runs garages at Bryan Street, Eastern Wharf, Liberty, Robinson, State and Whitaker. See current garage rates. A visitor day pass is $15 for 24 hours or $24 for 48 hours, sold at 100 East Bryan Street on weekdays. It covers overtime at many meters and limited time zones. On Tybee, beach parking is enforced from 8 am to 8 pm all year.
To Go Cups
The City's to go cup ordinance lets licensed places sell one drink per person in a paper or plastic cup, never a can, bottle or glass, up to 16 ounces. The zone runs roughly from the Talmadge Bridge and West Boundary Street south to Jones Street, and east to the railroad track. That is the 2017 ordinance, so check for changes if it matters to your plans.
Why The Streets Look Like This
The National Park Service explains that the city was planned as wards, each with a square at its center. It's why guests can stumble into a small park every couple of blocks, and why one way traffic bends around them. Add extra time for any shuttle between your hotel and venue.
